Bytes to Bits formula
bits = bytes × 8
Multiply the number of bytes by 8 to get bits. To go the other way, multiply by 0.125 instead, or use the bits to bytes converter.
Bytes to Bits conversion table
Common bytes to bits values, rounded for reading. The converter above keeps full precision.
| Bytes | Bits |
|---|---|
| 1 B | 8 bit |
| 2 B | 16 bit |
| 3 B | 24 bit |
| 4 B | 32 bit |
| 5 B | 40 bit |
| 10 B | 80 bit |
| 15 B | 120 bit |
| 20 B | 160 bit |
| 25 B | 200 bit |
| 50 B | 400 bit |
| 75 B | 600 bit |
| 100 B | 800 bit |
| 250 B | 2,000 bit |
| 500 B | 4,000 bit |
| 1,000 B | 8,000 bit |
Worked example
To convert 10 B to bits, multiply by 8: the result is 80 bit. Decimal units use powers of 1,000; binary IEC units use powers of 1,024. One gigabyte is not the same as one gibibyte.
Frequently asked questions
How many bits are in a byte?
One byte equals 8 bits (1 B = 8 bit).
What is 10 bytes in bits?
10 B converts to 80 bit. Enter any other value in the converter above to see it recalculated instantly.
How do I convert bits back to bytes?
Reverse the calculation: one bit equals 0.125 bytes. You can also swap the units in the converter or open the bits to bytes page.
