How the conversion works
total inches ÷ 12 = feet, remainder = inches
One foot is exactly 12 inches. Convert the whole measurement into inches, divide by 12, and the remainder is what is left over.
The order matters. Rounding the remainder after splitting can push it up to a full 12, producing answers like 0 ft 12 in that should have carried. This converter rounds once, on the total, before splitting — so that result cannot occur.

Frequently asked questions
What is 175 cm in ft and in?
175 cm is 5 ft 8.9 in.
How do you convert centimeters to feet and inches?
Convert the whole value into inches first, then divide by 12. The whole number is the feet and what is left over is the inches. Rounding at the end rather than the start is what produces impossible answers like "5 ft 12 in".
Why not just use a decimal?
Both are correct, but nobody states a height as 5.75 feet. The compound form is how these measurements are actually spoken and written, which is why it is worth converting to directly.
