How the conversion works
total pounds ÷ 14 = stone, remainder = pounds
One stone is exactly 14 pounds. Convert the whole measurement into pounds, divide by 14, and the remainder is what is left over.
The order matters. Rounding the remainder after splitting can push it up to a full 14, producing answers like 0 st 14 lb that should have carried. This converter rounds once, on the total, before splitting — so that result cannot occur.
Where this form is used
Body weight is quoted in stone and pounds in the UK and Ireland; almost nowhere else.
Frequently asked questions
What is 80 kg in st and lb?
80 kg is 12 st 8.4 lb.
How do you convert kilograms to stone and pounds?
Convert the whole value into pounds first, then divide by 14. The whole number is the stone and what is left over is the pounds. Rounding at the end rather than the start is what produces impossible answers like "5 st 14 lb".
Why not just use a decimal?
Both are correct, but nobody states a body weight as 11.02 stone. The compound form is how these measurements are actually spoken and written, which is why it is worth converting to directly.
