Square meters to square feet formula
ft² = m² ÷ 0.09290304
The international foot is exactly 0.3048 meters. A square foot is that length squared, so one square foot is exactly 0.09290304 square meters. Divide a square-meter area by 0.09290304 to get square feet. The same step as a multiplier is ft² = m² × 10.7639104167. Sqm and m² are the same unit, and sqft and ft² are the same unit. To go the other way, multiply by 0.09290304 or open the sqft to sqm converter.
Length and area use different factors. One meter is about 3.280839895 feet, and squaring that length produces 10.7639104167. Applying 3.28084 directly to an area treats the measurement as a length. Doing that to 50 m² produces about 164.04. The area conversion 50 ÷ 0.09290304 produces 538.195520835 ft².
Square meters to square feet conversion table
These are common metric floor areas, from a single square meter through a large apartment. Table cells are rounded to six significant figures. The converter above keeps up to twelve significant digits, which is why 1 m² is shown there as 10.7639104167 ft².

Worked example
A rectangular room 12 meters long and 8.5 meters wide covers 12 × 8.5 = 102 square meters. Divide that area by the exact square-foot factor: 102 ÷ 0.09290304 = 1097.9188625 square feet. Converting each side to feet and then multiplying reaches the same area, because both sides are lengths. Multiplying the finished 102 m² figure by 3.28 does not.
An L-shaped plan uses the same arithmetic in pieces. Split the outline into rectangles, multiply each length by its width in meters, add those areas, and divide the total by 0.09290304 once. Paint, flooring and tile quantities start from the area being covered. Openings and a waste allowance stay separate from the unit change.
Metric plans and square-foot listings
Floor plans in much of Europe, Australia and New Zealand are drawn in meters and stated in square meters. Many US plans, and some Canadian ones, are drawn in feet and stated in square feet. A converted figure is only as useful as the area the source actually measured. Gross internal area, net internal area and totals that include a balcony, garage or basement describe different surfaces. Read which surfaces the plan counted, then convert that number.
A meter by itself is a length. A square meter is an area. A cubic meter is a volume. A wall described as 4 meters long is not 4 square meters of floor, and a 4 cubic meter tank is not 4 square meters either. Measure length and width in meters, multiply, then divide by 0.09290304. Values are calculated in your browser and are not submitted with the conversion.
Frequently asked questions
How do you convert square meters to square feet?
Divide the square-meter figure by 0.09290304. That divisor is one international square foot. Multiplying by 10.7639104167 is the same step rounded for a calculator. Either way, 1 m² equals 10.7639104167 ft².
How many square feet are in one square meter?
One square meter equals 10.7639104167 square feet. Ten square meters equal 107.639104167 square feet, and 100 square meters equal 1076.39104167 square feet. Sqm, sq m and m² name the same unit.
Why is the area factor about 10.76 rather than 3.28?
A meter is about 3.28084 feet. Area is length times length, so the factor is squared and becomes 10.7639104167. Applying 3.28084 to 50 m² produces about 164.04. Dividing 50 by 0.09290304 produces 538.195520835 ft².
How do I convert a room measured in meters?
Multiply length by width in meters first. A rectangle 12 m by 8.5 m is 12 × 8.5 = 102 m². Divide 102 by 0.09290304 to get 1097.9188625 ft². For an L-shaped room, add the rectangular parts in square meters, then convert that total once.
How do I convert square feet back to square meters?
